The first component in this analysis represents the most variation explained in the data (in this case 60.49%), with subsequent components representing the next largest variance in the data. Distances between points on the plot represent how similar samples are in terms of microbiota composition and relative abundance. Points on the plot that are closer in space are therefore more similar in their taxonomic distribution. The top and bottom row plots are identical, differentially coloured based on variable of interest (top—study group; bottom—sample collection timepoint)
