Clinical inspection of implantation sites at the end of the experiment using a mucosa index based on the gingival index introduced by Löe [46]. Criteria for the assignment of the mucosa index: 0 = normal mucosa; 1 = mild inflammation—slight changes in colour, slight oedema, no bleeding; 2 = moderate inflammation -redness, oedema and glazing, bleeding on probing; 3 = Severe inflammation, marked redness and oedema, ulceration, tendency to spontaneous bleeding. A = control group treated with antibiotics continuously (N = 8); B = group infected via oral inoculation with P. gingivalis, F. nucleatum and S. oralis (N = 6)
