  1. Upper OCD (OCD-U) was defined by the distance between the upper outer surface of the splint and PLANE U1 for the intermediate splint (IS), or PLANE O for the final splint (FS). Lower OCD (OCD-L) was defined by the distance between the lower outer surface of the splint and PLANE L1 for the intermediate splint, or PLANE O for the final splint. OCD was determined by the sum of OCD-U and OCD-L, for either IS or FS, representing the total average coverage depth of the splints onto the dentition. The thickness of the splint was determined by the distance between the upper and lower outer surfaces of the splints. The thickness of the IS was approximated because the upper and lower outer surfaces of the IS were not always parallel since they were generated from translated PLAN U1 and PLANE L1
