Concept of surface curvature estimation displayed on an intraoral scan (a). With a surface curvature estimation algorithm, principal curvature directions and values, i.e., maximum (kmax) and minimum (kmin), were computed for each point of the intraoral scan. Principal curvature directions for a selected point (i.e., the intersection of the white lines) of two anatomically different regions, i.e., central (B) and interdental (C), were displayed with corresponding cross-sections (b and c). The principal curvature directions coincide with corono-apical (full white line) and mesio-distal (dashed white line) directions in those two selected regions. Note that principal curvature directions are switched in central and interdental regions. The curvature value of each point’s surface is visualised with colour mapping (d)
